Description
The large scale synchrotron radiation facility (SPring-8) project which has been advanced jointly by Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research is to construct the largest synchrotron radiation research facility in the world in Harima Science Park City, Hyogo Prefecture. This facility is a high luminance synchrotron radiation source placing emphasis on short wavelength region, and using an inserted light source as the main source. In this report, the results of the planning and research of the storage ring and the design of the linear accelerator and synchrotron as the injector are described. The storage ring with low emittance and high stability was to be required, accordingly in order to better the quality of the light source and reduce the harmful effect on the beam dynamics, the straight part of no dispersion was provided, and the inserted light source is to be installed there. The problems of the low emittance ring and the design of the low emittance lattice, the life time and instability of electron beam, the magnet system and the vacuum system for the SPring-8 are explained. The design of the SPring-8 is not still fixed, but its construction is started in fiscal year 1990. At present 2 years behind the construction schedule is expected. (K.I.)
