Radon problem of two Cornish tin mines

Creators

Description

This chapter summarizes the action taken by two Cornish tin mines to reduce radon daughter concentrations within the mine atmosphere by improved ventilation. The report considers two mines, owned by the South Crofty Group of Companies, namely the South Crofty Mine itself and its smaller subsidiary, Wheal Pendarves. An adequate and well maintained ventilation circuit at Wheal Pendarves which keeps the radon problem under control is described. When South Crofty is able to control their ventilation circuits to the same extent, the emission of radon will present less of a problem. Questions regarding waterborne radon, the plating-out of radon daughters, the sources of radon emission, airstream helmets and the variations in radon levels throughout the mine must still be answered
