Temperature dependence of the hyperfine field of Cerium in Gadolinium

Description
The temperature dependence of the internal field of Cerium in Gadolinium was measured for 4.2 K <= T < 250 K by the method of time differential angular correlation. The low temperature values of the internal field stay far below that expected for the free ion. This is interpreted as the Cerium ion being in a state of intermediate valence. The temperature dependence of the field is explained by a molecular field model including crystal electric field effects. (orig.)
