On the application of the superposition method to calculate fuel rod temperature field

Description
Engineering method for calculation of fuel element temperature field, providing arbitrary energy release and availability of defects in it, based on superposition of basic solutions resulting from solving equations of heat transfer for a fuel element and heat balance equation for the coolant is suggested. Heat transfer equation is considered in parabolic approximation, i.e. the axial heat diffusion in the coolant is neglected in comparison with the induced convective heat flux, in the fuel element the axial heat fluxes are neglected in comparison with the radial ones. The given technique is applied to calculate the temperature, fields of the sodium cooled fast reactor fuel can. The suggested method permits to calculate the fuel element temperature field after swelling, it is independent on the fuel element geometrical configuration
