Specimens removed from the damaged Three Mile Island reactor vessel

Description

In February 1990, after two years of intensive design, fabrication and testing of equipment and procedures, metallurgy specimen were removed from the reactor vessel and adjacent areas. Forty foot long robotic delivery tools and remote measuring, sealing and cutting equipment were used to complete the work, operating through approximately 35 feet of water. Thirty-one reactor vessel specimens were removed without degrading the vessels ability to hold water and pressure. 12 figs
