Viscosity increase as a function of polarization in liquid 3He

  • 1. Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratorium, Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, P.O. Box 9506, 2300 RA Leiden, The Netherlands

Description

The polarization dependence of the viscosity of spin-polarized liquid 3He has been determined in the temperature range 75mK<T<300 mK and the polarization range Δ<0.35. We find an increase in the viscosity, which can be described as etaproportional(1+αΔ2) with α = 4.0 +- 1.5, at a pressure of 27 bars. This increase is expected from the ratio of the cross sections for s-wave and p-wave scattering. It is rather surprising, however, that there is no temperature dependence of α. .AE
