Computer studies of surface recoil ejection mechanisms from gold single crystals

Description

The computer program MARLOWE has been used to investigate the most probable surface recoil processes leading to ejection of atoms from (001) gold surface as a result of irradiation with 20 keV argon atoms. The occurrence of direct and deflected surface recoils is confirmed but other possible mechanisms, involving further generation of displacements in the cascade, are also found. The three-dimensional simulation is shown to permit direct comparison with experimental results in terms of intensity as well as energy. (orig.)
