Comet Halley hydroxyl observations at 18 cm during the transits of the Galactic plane and Centaurus A
Creators
Description
The 1665 and 1667 MHz OH lines from Comet Halley were seen in absorption during the transits of the Galactic plane and Centaurus A. Peak line flux densities of -13.4 Jy and -4.0 Jy were observed at 1667 MHz during the two transits. The mean line width was 2500 m/s, but the line profile showed rapid variations in shape. The profiles are consistent with parent H2O and daughter OH molecules in the coma having similar velocities of about 1000 m/s, with small velocity dispersions of about 100 m/s, and a clumpy distribution. 9 references
