Effect of microstructure on weld metal toughness

  • 1. GKSS-Forschungszentrum Geesthacht GmbH, Geesthacht-Tesperhude (Germany, F.R.). Inst. fuer Materialforschung

Description

The microstructures and fracture toughnesses (Charpy and CTOD) of three multipas MIG/MAG ferritic welds were studied. MIG/MAG multipass welds were deposited on 30 mm thick pipeline steel StE 445.7 TM (=X65TM) by an industrial robot. The toughness results are discussed on the basis of variations in weld metal microconstituents and non-metallic inclusion distributions. The dual role of the inclusions, as influencing the formation of the acicular ferrite and as being the potential site for the cleavage fracture initiation was investigated. Quantitative chemical analysis of the inclusions revealed that certain elemental coating will promote the acicular ferrite nucleations. The degredation of the CTOD toughness values was explained with the coarser inclusion contents and clustered distribution of inclusions. (orig./MM)
