A research on the effect of functional groups, solution P H and packing of molecules on the adsorption of activated carbon

Description

Adsorption of three aromatic compounds (two of them are electrolytes) onto an untreated carbon is investigated. In low P H, all solutes were in their molecular forms and in higher P H the electrolytes were in ionic forms. Theoretical maximum adsorption capacities that are based on the BET surface area of the adsorbent can not be close to the real value. The maximum adsorption can not be close to the real value. The maximum adsorption capacity of activated carbon for each solute dependent on the molecular area as well as the P H of solution and the type of functional group attached on the aromatic compound. It was observed that there is no relationship between Q max and the molecular areas in all three plains. It is illustrated that the packing arrangement is most likely edge to face (sorbate-sorbent) with various tilt angles. The affinity and the heterogeneity of the adsorption systems are observed to be related to the pKa of the solutes and P H of solution
