The resemblance between the extended components of radio galaxies and the remnants of supernovae of the plerions type

Description

In order to obtain a representative sample of extended components of double radio galaxies, the relationships between the surface radio brightness and the size are obtained for various frequencies and for various red shift intervals. The mean slope of these functions is 2.5 + or - 0.28, which is close to the value of the slope of the similar function for plerion type supernova remnants (2.35 + or - 0.20). This agreement evidently indicates a continuing supply of the extended components with energetic particles coming from the nucleus. The same function is plotted from a subsample at frequency 1400 MHz for radio galaxies with z≤ 0.1 and consisting of 55 extended components, and it is in theory possible to estimate from it the distances to unidentified distant radio sources. The accuracy of the estimates of the distances by the proposed method is no worse than for the estimates from the red shifts with allowance for the uncertainty in H /sub O/ = (75 + or - 25) km x sec-1 x Mpc-1
