Correlation between x-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion in clusters of galaxies

Description
The correlation between x-ray luminosity and velocity dispersion for clusters of galaxies is reanalyzed on the basis of HEAO-1 A-2 and Einstein fluxes and published velocity dispersions for a significant number of clusters. Between these parameters a strong correlation of the form L/sub x/approx.sigma/sup 4.0plus-or-minus0.7/ for the HEAO-1 data and L/sub x/approx.sigma/sup 3.7plus-or-minus0.4/ for the Einstein data is found. The implications of these results for our understanding of the structure and origin of the x-ray-emitting gas are discussed in detail
