Electrocardiographic examination in radiotherapy of the thoracic region. 1

  • 1. Bezirkskrankenhaus Karl-Marx-Stadt (German Democratic Republic)

Description

78 patients suffering from brest cancer (57) and testicular tumors (21), resp., were high-voltage irradiated by means of a linear accelerator. Because of the unavoidable co-irradiation of the heart ECG examination was performed during radiotherapy and at intervals up to postirradiation day 360. Determination of enzyme activities ran parallel. 40 patients revealed ECG disturbances during radiotherapy. In 21 cases they were probably caused by irradiation and in 19 cases the disturbances seemed to be related to radiotherapy. The earliest pathological changes were observed 3 weeks postirradiation. Regular estimation of cardiological alterations and of the ECGs in radiotherapy of the thoracic region is necessary to evidence radiation-induced myopericarditis
