Reliability of liquid metal breeder reactor cooling systems
Description
The reliability of the cooling systems employed during shutdown of liquid metal fast breeder reactors is discussed. Extremely high reliabilities of the decay heat removal system can be achieved by a combination of redundant design with the unique properties of liquid metal coolants operated at substantially lower temperatures than the metal's boiling point. A commercial-sized breeder reactor was selected as an example for the reliability modeling of the cooling system. Markov models in the form of state transition diagrams are used to exploit the effect of repairs on system reliability. 5 refs
