Polarization models for hot nonradial pulsators

  • 1. Tasmania Univ., Sandy Bay (Australia). Dept. of Physics

Description

Polarization calculations have been made for some accurate model atmospheres with parameters applicable to β Cephei and 53 Persei variables. Variable polarization effects expected from nonradial pulsations of such stars have been modelled. With the possible exception of BW Vul, it is shown that such effects are too small to be detected in the visual but should be large enough at satellite ultraviolet wavelengths to provide a further mode discrimination test in these hot pulsators. Polarization results of all models up to l=3 are presented together with a comparison of β Cephei light and radial velocity data with model predictions. (author)
