High flux neutron sources

Description
There is given a short survey of articles published in ''Nucl. Instrum. Meth.'', 1977, v. 145, n. 1, and presenting the modern status of developments in the field of high-flux neutron sources (HFNS). Five different types of HFNS's are considered. The 1st has a solid cooled target irradiated with keV range deuterons or a deuteron-triton mixture. The resulting neutron flux attains 3x1012 n/cm2xs. The 2nd type of HFNS's utilizes neutron ''stripping'' off MeV range deuterons interacting with light nuclei (neutron flux up to 1013 n/cm2xs). The 3d type of HFNS's is based on the spallation of 238U or W under irradiation by 1 GeV protons. The reactions between tritium ions and deuterium gaseous targets are realized in the 4th type of HFNS's, which provide neutron fluxes as high as 1013-14 n/cm2xs. Some information on laser plasma projects aimed at neutron fluxes up to 1014 n/cm2xs is also given. Merits and dimerits of HFNS's of all the types considered are shortly discussed
