Thermal processing and effect of additives on Ba-hexaferrite

  • 1. Doctor A.Q. Khan Research Labs., Islamabad (Pakistan)

Description

Isotropic Ba-hexaferrite (BaFe/sub 12/O/sub 19/) was synthesized from powders of BaCO/sub 3/ and Fe/sub 2/O/sub 3/ by adapting the conventional ceramic technique. Effect of heat treatment and additives (SiO/sub 2/ and CaO) on the magnetic and microstructural properties was studied. CaO-addition promotes densification, which results in increased remanence, but due to simultaneous grain growth the coercivity drops. SiO/sub 2/ addition is known to suppress grain growth. Simultaneous addition of CaO and SiO/sub 2/ is shown to be very beneficial in tailoring a dense microstructure with relatively small grains. The ratio of SiO/sub 2/CaO was found to be optimum at about I. XRD studies confirmed the BaFe/sub l2/O/sub 19/ phase. Microstructural studies were performed on SEM, equipped with EDX-system.
