IEAust calls for separate body to oversee ANSTO operations

Creators

Description

An investigation carried out over several months of safety procedures at Lucas Heights had found that the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO) needs to create a safety culture at the nuclear reactor and that in order to eliminate any perception that the Nuclear Safety Bureau, which oversees ANSTO's operations, is part of the ANSTO organization, it should be reconstituted as a separate statutory body and given the responsibilities to report to both the minister and the public. It has also found that ANSTO has responded positively to recommendations made by the Atomic Energy Commission of Canada. The chief executive of the Institution of Engineers Australia has nevertheless recommended that ANSTO should consider replacing the existing reactor. ill
