Description

Presentation Priority Projects of Environmental Remediation of the Arctic and the Need for International Cooperation by Ashot Sarkisov from Russian Academy of Science described the status of sunken and dumped nuclear submarines, reactors and radioactive waste in the Arctic seas as of 2012. Analysis of risks related to three sunken submarines was done (K-159, K-27 and Komsomolets). Specific problems related to the initiation of the Arctic remediation programme in Russia were explained. Suggestions for international cooperation and priority projects for further investigations and remediation efforts were presented.
