The status of nuclear energy in France
Description
In 1989 75% of French electrical generation was nuclear, representing 289 Gwh, largely from pressurized water reactors. The French nuclear industry is integrated: EdF is the sole owner and operator of plants; CEA does research; Framaton is the major engineering group; Alsthrom provides turbogeneration; Gogema produces nuclear fuel. Maintenance of an effective nuclear system in the future will need technological developments for the continuing performance of installed units, building the next series and the development of fast breeder reactors.
