Surface muon news
Description
The development of the πE3 pion beam into a surface muon beam has been described previously. The positron contamination of the surface muons is suppressed by means of a degrader composed of mylar foils. The thickness of the degrader including the vacuum window can now be chosen to be 70, 145, 270 or 345 μm. By using the appropriate degrader thickness, one can thus select the optimum beam conditions with respect to muon momentum at the channel end, positron contamination, momentum band and intensity.
