Description
The subsolidus region of the HfO2-ZrO2-CaO system was studied by x-ray diffraction. The ratio of cubic to monoclinic solid solutions was controlled by special heat treatment described previously. Cubic solid solutions of fluorite-type are formed in the (Zrsub(1-x)Hfsub(x))O2-CaO section (O<=x<=1). Monoclinic (tetragonal at high temperature) α solid solutions containing <1 mole % CaO are formed on the HfO2-ZrO2 side of the phase diagram. Increasing CaO concentration results in formation of fluorite-type and orthorhombic Ca(ZrHf)O2 solid solutions (single-phase γ region) in the center of the phase diagram. Isothermal sections are shown for 1500, 1750, 1900, and 21000. The γ region expands on increasing temperature
