Electrochemical studies of Pu3+/Pu in LICl-KCl melt

Description
Pyrochemical reprocessing is ideally suited for reprocessing of spent metallic fuels. Molten salt electrorefining is the key step in this process. The separation by electrochemical means is based on the thermodynamic stabilities of the chlorides of actinides and the fission products. The electrochemical behaviour of plutonium in LiCl-KCl eutectic is studied in the present work and compared with the literature data. The electrochemical behavior of Pu+3 was studied in the temperature range 748 - 823 K in LiCl-KCl using transient electrochemical techniques, namely, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and chronopotentiometry (CP). The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of Pu3+ in LiCl-KCl eutectic and the activation energy were determined in the present work
