Duopigatron metal ion source
Description
A compact ion source of the Duopigatron configuration has been developed and investigated by Winter and Keller. With the low voltage high current mode in this source metal atoms were brought into the discharge via sputtering. Ions up to 5+ have been extracted. The Duopigatron metal ion source was installed in a 300 kV accelerator. Ions of several elements such as 27Al+, 48Ti3+, 52Cr2+, 56Fe2+, 58Ni+, 59Co+, 64Zn+, 63Cu2+, 90Zr3+, 98Mo+, 106Pd2+, 109Ag2+, 166Er4+, 184W3+, 195Pt3+, 208Pb4+, 209Bi4+ were accelerated to energies between 30 KeV and 1 MeV. Argon was used as auxiliary gas. Typically electric currents of 50 μA for singly charged metal ions can be obtained amounting to 10% of the total ion output of the source. The lifetime of the source was approximately 25h. (Auth.)
