Radiation induced abnormalities in Rhode Island chick embry
Description
The three radiation levels of 1170, 1040, and 910 R had lethal effects on the 7-day chick embryo. The dose level 660 R showed varying results on the 7-day chick embryo: 3 days after reincubation; 70% embryos were surviving but had deformed legs, 20% of the treated eggs failed to develop and 10% were dead. (b) 14 days after reincubation; 25% were dead embryos of 7 days old and the remaining 75% were dead embryos of 16-18 days old. Certain anomalies were induced by the action of 660 R gamma radiation on the 7-day chick embryo reincubated for 14 days. Such defects were presented by paralysed tarsometatarsus bones and digits, cross-beak abnormalities, failure in development of the roof of the skull, deformed lobulated brain protruding upwards out of the skull, and lateralwards from the place of the missing left eye. The right eye of one embryo was invisible, being completely hidden under the skin. The dose level 660 R induced abnormal lengthening of the intestine and caeca reaching four folds that of the control. The results have been discussed in view of the relevant literature
