Fracture toughness of functionally graded epoxy- alumina polymer nanocomposites

  • 1. Department of Mechanical Engineering, Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology Allahabad, Prayagraj (India)

Description

Fracture properties of functionally graded polymer nanocomposites (FGPNC) were evaluated experimentally. Layered FGPNC was prepared by distribution of alumina nanoparticles in the epoxy matrix through ultrasonication. Spherical and rod shape alumina nanoparticles were used for the gradation of properties. Weight fraction of alumina nanoparticles were varied in the thickness direction. For the preparation of layered FGPNC neat epoxy, 0.25 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, 0.75 wt.% and 1 wt.% nanocomposite sheets were sequentially casted in vertical acrylic moulds. Fracture toughness (Kic) of FGPNC samples were calculated by three point bending test. FGPNC with spherical alumina nanoparticles showed the most superior fracture properties. (author)
