How UK nuclear power stations are designed to be safe
Description
The accident at Chernobyl and the scale of the consequences were due to shortcomings in the design and operation of the reactor. In the UK the extremely high standards applied to the design and operation of nuclear power stations are intended to minimise the likelihood of faults. Suitable protective equipment is provided to ensure that any faults which may occur do not lead to serious consequences. The paper illustrates the UK standards and provisions by reference to the latest Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors at Heysham 2 and Torness and the Pressurised Water Reactor under construction at Sizewell.
