International PSA experience

  • 1. International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna (Austria). Div. of Nuclear Safety

Description

This paper focuses on PSA-related activities of some international organizations, i.e. IAEA, NEA and the CEC. The paper describes the status of and some trends in national PSA programmes. This includes observations concerning major progress achieved with respect to the treatment of specific PSA topics such as: common cause failures, human interactions, containment performance and source term issues. Some activities related to realization of the ''Living'' PSA concept and the corresponding findings are described. In addition to traditional uses of PSA to identify design and procedural weaknesses, there is a still not fully used potential for more advanced PSA applications, including those supporting safe plant operations. Five major PSA application areas are defined and specific applications are grouped taking into account similarities with respect to PSA modelling and data requirements, necessary calculational capabilities, and presentation of results.
