Auroral frequency in the 17th and 18th centuries and the 'Maunder minimum'

It is shown that such data as exist on auroral observations in the latter half of the 17th century do not provide the conclusive evidence that some authors have claimed for the so-called Maunder minimum in solar activity between 1645 and 1715. (author)
