Description
The 543 atmospheric nuclear tests released radionuclides that have deposited themselves throughout the world. The Environmental Study and Surveillance Laboratory, 'Laboratoire d'Etude et de Surveillance de l'Environnement' (LESE), takes part, for more than 35 years, in the evaluation of the dosimetric consequences of these atmospheric depositions, especially those originating with the 41 tests realized in the Territory of French Polynesia from 1966 to 1974. This laboratory is established in Tahiti. The ingestion component of this dosimetric evaluation requires to collect the most representative samples of the 'feed ration' of the Polynesians living in the 5 archipelagoes of this territory. These samples belong to the marine environment of full sea, the 'lagoon' environment and the terrestrial environment. Certain samples of the physical environment are also taken (air, water). The 312 samples are measured by GAMMA spectrometry high resolution in order to determine levels of the lowest possible radioactivity. On 48 selected samples the levels of activity of the 90Sr and 238Pu and 239+240Pu are also given. During the year 2002 results fall under the continuity of a regular reduction in the levels of radioactivity since the stop, in 1974, of the French atmospheric tests. This residual radioactivity relates to primarily the 137Cs. In term of ingestion dosimetry this artificial and residual radioactivity is lower than 3 μSv.an-1. This ingestion contribution corresponds to less than 1 % of exposure due to natural radioactivity (approximately 1000 μSv)

Les 543 essais nucleaires realises en atmosphere ont libere des radionucleides qui se sont deposes sur l'ensemble du globe. Le Laboratoire d'Etude et de Suivi de l'Environnement (LESE), implante a Tahiti, participe depuis plus de 35 ans a l'evaluation dosimetrique de ces retombees dans le Pacifique. Cette evaluation concerne en particulier les 41 essais atmospheriques realises par la France en Polynesie Francaise entre 1966 et 1974. La composante ingestion de cette evaluation dosimetrique necessite de prelever des echantillons les plus representatifs de la ration alimentaire des polynesiens vivant dans les 5 archipels de ce territoire. Ces echantillons appartiennent au milieu marin de pleine mer, au milieu marin lagonaire et au milieu terrestre. Certains echantillons du milieu physique ont aussi ete preleves (air, eau). Les 324 echantillons ont ete mesures par spectrometrie gamma haute resolution afin de determiner les niveaux de radioactivite les plus faibles possible. Sur 48 echantillons selectionnes les niveaux d'activite du 90Sr et des 238Pu et 239+240Pu ont aussi ete determines. Pour l'annee 2002 les resultats s'inscrivent dans la continuite d'une diminution reguliere des niveaux de radioactivite depuis l'arret, en 1974, des essais atmospheriques francais. Cette radioactivite residuelle concerne essentiellement le 137Cs. En terme de dosimetrie liee a l'ingestion cette radioactivite residuelle, d'origine artificielle, est inferieure a 3 μSv.an-1, soit moins de 1 % de la dose associee a l'irradiation naturelle en Polynesie (environ 1000 μSv)Files
