Classical cross sections for collisions between electrons and hydrogen atoms at intermediate energies

  • 1. Joint Inst. for Astrophysics, Boulder, Colo. (USA)

Description

Classical cross sections for collisions between electrons and highly excited atoms of ionization energy U are calculated for incident electron energies E in the range. U/4<or=E<or=4U and energy transfers down to 0.02U. The orbit integration or Monte Carlo method is used, and most statistical errors for the important energy transfers are of order 3% or less. The cross sections are needed for an understanding of recombination lines emitted from cool interstellar regions. Final classical states of the individual collisions have been recorded on magnetic tape for future use.
