Sizing and image reconstruction of flaws by mechanized ultrasonic inspection system

Description
Periodic in-service inspection is required to assure the reliability to a nuclear power plant in operation. Recently, many studies have been done on the reliability of ultrasonic inspection using partial full-scale mockups. This paper evaluates the sizing and image reconstruction capability of an automated ultrasonic inspection system that analyzes flaw data, based on ASME Code Section XI. The 161 mm thick SA 533B CL.1 specimens with artificial flaws on the clad/unclad surface were examined using a mechanized inspection device. The experimental test result shows that conventional ultrasonic inspection technique is capable of flaw detection but that additional effort will be necessary for flaw sizing. 4 refs
