The application of gamma radiation to combat ochre deposition in drilled water wells

  • 1. Akademie der Wissenschaften der DDR, Leipzig. Zentralinstitut fuer Isotopen- und Strahlenforschung

Description

Ochre deposition is the precipitation of insoluble iron and manganese oxide hydrates caused by both biological and chemical action inside the pore channels of aquifer and strainer slots of well filters. Radiation kills the iron bacteria and effects the mineralization of ochre sludge. By means of this method the life time of wells is extended by a factor 2 and more. Economical benefits are caused by savings in investment costs, manpower and energy. (author)
