Description

Solid state chemical reactions between YBa2Cu3O7-x and oxides of Eu, Ca, Th, Sc and Ce were studied at 925 deg C in air at ambient pressure. Europium oxide behaved like an excess of yttrium oxide, producing solid solutions of the type (Y,Eu)Ba2Cu3O7-x and (Y,Eu)2BaCuO5. CaCO3 and the CaCO3/ThO2 carbonate-oxide pair were found not to react with YBa2Cu3O7-x despite the fact that calcium and the calcium-thorium pair partially substitute for yttrium in YBa2Cu3O7-x. Reactions with CeO2 and Sc2O3 led to the formation of BaCeO3 and Sc-4Ba3Cu3O12, compounds which appear to be the most stable in the Y(Ce)-Ba-Cu-O and Y(Sc)-Ba-Cu-O systems respectively
