Repeated inhalation exposure of rats to aerosols of 239PuO2

Description
The effects of protracted alpha irradiation of rat lungs are being studied. Rats are being or have been exposed once or repeatedly to aerosols of 239PuO2 to achieve or to reestablish lung burdens of 239PuO2 that will result in alpha radiation doses to the lungs of 20, 60, 200 or 600 rads. All of the single and six of 7 bimonthly repeated exposures have been completed and about 97% of the rats remain alive. No adverse effects from the single or repeated exposures have been observed
