Evaluation of protective role of thiols and W R-2721 against biological effects of radiation exposure. I X- histochemical study on small intestine

Males swiss albino mice had received whole-body gamma irradiation at dose levels, 6, 7.33 and 10 Gy. Polysaccharides and protein levels in the intestinal villa and crypts were studied histochemically after 24, 48 and 72 hr post-exposure. Doses of and 7.33 Gy, caused a slight reduction of polysaccharides and protein levels in the duodenal villi and crypts after 48 and 72 hr of exposure. The dose 10 Gy caused a marked decrease of polysaccharides and protein levels in the duodenal villi and crypts after 24, and 72 hr of exposure. When either 2-mercaptoptopionyl glycine (Thiols) or S-2 (3-aminopropylamino) ethylphosphorothioic acid (W R-2721) was injected intraperitoncally (i p) 15-30 min pre-irradiation at a concentration levels of 100 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg body weight respectively a significant protection against radiations effects was observed. This was apparent in restoring the levels of polysaccharides and proteins
