Applied-B/sub theta/ magnetically insulated ion diode

  • 1. Laboratory of Plasma Studies, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 14853

Description

A new magnetically insulated ion diode geometry has been developed for use on a 270-kV, 3.3-Ω, 80-ns pulse line. A proton beam is extracted at approx.100 A/cm2 with a divergence angle of < or approx. = 20 (full width at half angle), and focused to over 600 A/cm2. Magnetic insulation is provided by a current flowing through a conductor on the axis of the diode in the same direction as the ion beam
