Adsorption of Cs+ and Zn2+ cations on smooth platinum, iridium and rhodium electrodes

Description

A comparative study of adsorption of cations Cs+ and Zn2+ on smooth platinum, iridium and rhodium electrodes has been carried out by the method of complex potentiodynamic pulses. The influence of Cs+ and Zn2+ cations on the adsorption of hydrogen and oxygen on the electrodes has been determined. The rate constant of adsorption of zinc ions is found to be much higher than that of cesium ions. The character of the adsorption and the main experimental patterns of cation adsorpy experimental patterns of cation adsorption on smooth platinum, iridium, and rhodium electrodes are determined by the position of the zero free-charge point of a given metal, as well as by the strength and ''ionic'' degree of the bond metal-adsorbed cation, that is, by the forces of mutual repulsion between the adsorbed cations. The influence of cations on adsorption of hydrogen is determined by the competition between cations and hydrogen for a free surface and respectively, by the strength of the metal-hydrogen bound, as well as by electrostatic factors, that is, by polarity of metal-hydrogen bond and ''ionic'' character of the metal-adsorbed cation bond
