Analysis of Nd-Fe-B-C alloys by x-ray diffraction

Description

Nd-Fe-B alloys are used in making magnets with unique properties. The general use of these alloys requires methods of monitoring them at various stages. In this work, information is classified on phases in the Nd-Fe-B-C system, where the basis for the crystal structures and calculations on the line positions and intensities is given from a computer program. The calculated intensities form the basis for quantitative x-ray analysis. When a Nd-Fe-B casting is made by melting the components together, x-ray diffraction enables the determination of the equilibration. When calcium or carbon is used to reduce the oxides together to form the alloys, the method is basic for examining the phase compositions, since from it the chemical composition may be deduced more accurately than by chemical methods. The line diagrams presented here can be used in qualitative x-ray phase analysis, while the calculated intensities can be used in quantitative analysis. 21 refs., 1 fig., 3 tabs
