Description

The energy and mineral industries release SO2, NOx, H2S, CO2 and dust containing heavy metals into the atmosphere, and wastewater with heavy metals and high salt concentrations into rivers. Nuclear techniques, such as ionization detection and X ray fluorescence spectroscopy, permit on-line monitoring of pollutant traces in environmental measurements. Radiation treatment technologies, which can remove flue gas in coal fired boilers and degrade biologically stable halocarbon pollutants in water, have great scope in the future.
