Practical application of COD measurement in welded assemblies

Description

Measurement of the COD makes it possible to evaluate sensitivity to brittle fracture initiation. This technique is ideal for welded structures, owing to the types of defect likely to affect them, and the magnitude of the residual stresses introduced. Moreover, the COD concept, based on thickness and temperature experiments on materials, enables evaluation of the critical defect size in these structures. However, its application to welded joints encounters certain problems. The presence of fatigue cracks in the molten zone of a welded joint is frequently disturbed by the residual stresses caused by welding. An additional difficulty is created by the problem of stable growth of the crack during the bending test. This discussion covers all these matters and suggests some solutions

Abstract (French)

La mesure du COD permet d'evaluer la sensibilite a l'amorcage d'une rupture fragile. Cette technique s'applique particulierement aux constructions soudees du fait de la nature des defauts pouvant les affecter et de l'importance des contraintes residuelles introduites. De plus, le concept du COD base sur l'experimentation des materiaux en epaisseur et temperature permet d'evaluer la dimension de defaut tolerable dans ces constructions. Cependant, l'application aux joints soudes presente certaines difficultes. L'obtention de fissure de fatigue dans la zone fondue d'un joint soude est souvent perturbee par les contraintes residuelles dues au soudage. Une difficulte supplementaire est apportee par le probleme de la croissance stable de la fissure lors de l'essai de flexion. Cet expose abordera tous ces problemes et certaines solutions seront proposees
