Effect of sound waves, Alfven waves, and heat flow on interplanetary shock waves

Description

We analyze the effects of sound waves, Alfvén waves, and 'additional' heat flow on shock waves. For the special cases in which the waves make their greatest impact on the Rankine-Hugoniot relations it is found that (1) Alfvén waves diminish the shock compression and (2) sound waves either enhance or diminish the compression ratio according to whether the incident wave vector is parallel or antiparallel to the direction of flow through the shock. An additional heat flux may either enhance or diminish the compression ratio depending upon whether the heat flux behind the shock is greater or less than that ahead of it. The implications of these results for interplanetary shocks are discussed.
