Description
A new method of magnetic field isochronization is presented. The magnetic field nonlinearities are treated globally, by determining the main field profile that minimizes the trimming coil power in the operating region of the machine, and for each accelerated beam by determining the optimal coil current settings. The generality of the method is illustrated in the case of a proton and a heavy-ion cyclotron. The method is applied to the development of the concept of a multiparticle facility based on an ECR ion source and a cyclotron with a presaturated magnet. (orig.)
