Photoluminescence of Gd3+ ion in La(OH)3
Description
Photoluminescence spectra of La(OH)3 and La(OH)3 doped with different amounts of Gd3+ ions have been investigated. Pure La(OH)3 is found to be non-luminescent whereas La(OH)3 doped with Gd3+ becomes luminescent with characteristic emission due to Gd3+ ion at 312 and 306 nm. Other emission bands observed are at 320, 345, 465 and 505 nm. In the excitation spectra bands at 240, 254 and 273 nm are observed. The IR spectra of the samples show bending and stretching modes of O-H group which support the idea of vibronic transitions in the La(OH)3:Gd system. From these results the excitation and emission lines have been attributed to transitions from 8S → 6D, 6I and 6P → 8S respectively. (author)
