Method for the chemical decontamination of nuclear reactor components

Description

In order to decontaminate metallic components of water-cooled nuclear reactors, a two-stage process is proposed. It is an improvement of the APAC process (alkaline permanganate ammonium citrate). Following an oxidative pretreatment with alkaline permanganate solution at about 1000C, one rinses with deionate and then allows it to pickle for 5-20 hours in a citrate-oxalate solution (pH=3.5) and again washes with deionate. The exact compositions of the solutions are given. (UWI)

Abstract (German)

Zur Dekontamination von metallischen Bauteilen wassergekuehlter Kernreaktoren wird ein zweistufiges Verfahren vorgeschlagen, es handelt sich um eine Verbesserung des APAC-Verfahrens (Alkaline-Permanganate-Ammonium-Citrate). Nach einer oxidativen Vorbehandlung mit alkalischer Permanganatloesung bei ca. 1000l, wird mit Deionat gespuelt, danach fuer 5-20 Stunden mit einer Citrat-Oxalat-Loesung (pH=3,5) gebeizt und wieder mit Deionat gespuelt. Die genauen zusammensetzungen der Loesungen sind angegeben. (UWI)
