Formation and evolution of a gas-liquid emulsion

The short range effect of an emulsifier on the characteristics of the resulting mixture was studied in the particular case of the air-water couple, for high velocity and high void fraction. Every emulsifier configuration with constant cross section was studied by measuring static pressions, void fraction profiles, and interface velocity. A theoretical study of the expansion zone was made: a model that gives an account of the pressure variation is presented. Emulsifiers with variable cross sections, and a constant section emulsifier with a diaphragm at the downstream end were then studied. It was experimentally shown that the effect of the geometrical parameters of the emulsifier is small. The causes of pressure drops were evaluated. The leading parts played by the densiest phase and the void fraction were revealed for various conditions: permanent flow, sudden expansion, relaxation oscillations

On a etudie l'influence, a courte distance, d'un emulseur sur les caracteristiques du melange resultant, dans le cas particulier du couple eau-air a grande vitesse et fort taux de vide. On a etudie successivement les six configurations possibles d'emulseurs a section constante en mesurant les pressions statiques, les profils de taux de vide et de vitesse d'interface, et on a fait l'etude theorique de la zone de detente: un modele rend compte des variations de pression. On presente ensuite l'etude d'emulseurs a section variable puis celle d'un emulseur a section constante ayant un diaphragme en bout d'installation, en aval. Ces etudes ont permis de demontrer experimentalement la faible influence des parametres geometriques de l'emulseur et evaluer les causes de perte de pression.
