Description

The magnetic inelastic scattering of neutrons by paramagnetic rare-earth compounds where the rare-earth ion has a substantial crystal-field splitting is studied theoretically. Using the time-dependent spin correlation functions, the effects of the crystal-field and exchange to the first and second moments of inelastic neutron scattering cross section are investigated. The results are applied to the singlet ground-state Pr- and Tm-compounds. We also discussed the relationship between the temperature dependence of the intensity of quasi-elastic scattering and those of longitudinal relaxation rates of NMR and EPR. (author)
