Over the past forty years, industrial growth has been exceptionally strong around the Mediterranean. The area now hosts more than ten percent of the world's industrial production, for a little more than seven percent of the world's population. A few examples illustrate this situation. But what is striking too is that nearly all the Mediterranean countries have entered a period of great uncertainty in which the growth curves can no longer be extrapolated without undue risk.
