Recovery of Am from analytical waste containing macro amounts of U using Cyanex-923

  • 1. Radiochemistry Div., Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai (India)

Description

A novel procedure has been developed for the recovery of Am from an analytical waste containing ≅ 100 g/l of U(VI) and 10 mg/l of Am(III) in 7.5 M HNO3 using 30% Cyanex-923 in n-dodecane. U(VI) was extracted quantitatively into n-dodecane with 50% TBP. The raffinate containing Am was adjusted to 0.1 M HNO3 maintaining the nitrate ion concentration at around 5 M and Am was extracted into n-dodecane with 30% Cyanex. Back-extraction was carried out using either 0.4 M ammonium oxalate or 8.0 M nitric acid. (author)
