Description

A new facility for hadronic physics has been recently funded by the German Government. It is part of a major upgrade of the GSI accelerator complex presently running in Darmstadt. An intense, high momentum resolution antiproton beam, with momenta between 1.5 and 15 GeV/c, will be available at the High Energy Storage Ring (HESR), and the experimental activity will be carried out using a general purpose detector (PANDA), that will be built surrounding an internal target station installed at one of the two straight sections of the storage ring. The main characteristics of the new facility, the scientific program, and the design strategy of the PANDA detector are here presented
